You can’t beat a baby book that offers another level of education beyond simple first concepts. We have always loved Alexander Girard’s Color, which explores the spectrum through the work of the 20th-century designer. In a similar vein is Blue & Other Colours with Henri Matisse (Phaidon, RRP £6.95), a board book that looks at the French artist’s paper cuts from the perspective of the colours he used – clue, there’s a lot of blue! Matisse’s work is striking with stark colour contrasts, so will appeal visually to very young children as they learn the rainbow.
