The day after I came home from the hospital with my first child a hatbox filled with treats arrived from my best friend. Now you all know how that’s going to hit a girl who’s just become a Mama but when I saw the beautiful journal she had chosen I was lost. First 1000 Days is an unusual baby journal with a double page for each month up to 24 months and then the rest of the book has prompts for things to record such as songs you sing together, friends and first adventures. The whole book is illustrated with Nikki McClure’s paper cuts which she created as her own child grew.
More recently my baby turned three and again received a Nikki McClure book for her collection. Mama, Is It Summer Yet? is a conversation between an eager child and his Mama. As Summer approaches Mama tells her child about the signs of the season. A lovely book to read and feel connected to the seasons alongside Collect Raindrops: The Seasons Gathered which is a collection of Nikki’s work split into seasonal sections. Her other books Awake to Nap and All in a Day are just as engaging and have the same gentle pace about them.
