In my experience the single most useful item any Mama can have is a stack of Muslins. They wipe up spills, protect clothes, act as a blanket, can be made into a nappy, make a sunshade, wipe noses and be a comfort blanket to name just a few of the ways they make your life easier. So it goes without saying that they are the perfect gift to a new Mama except they’re not the most exciting one to open.
So when my friend BertieD tweeted pictures of these divine creations I knew she had hit upon a superb idea. By taking a little time and effort a thoughtful yet dull gift is transformed into a thing of beauty.
The bird, poodle and cat (pictured below bottom) were made using patterns from The Stitch-It Kit by Jenny Hart of Sublime Stitching an excellent starter set which comes with: 35 transfer patterns, 7 embroidery threads, an embroidery hoop, embroidery needle, 2 tea towels and full instruction book (at time of writing Amazon are awaiting stock). For the poodle (close up) Bert has used a multicoloured thread which looks stunning. If all of this craftiness has you inspired, why not create your own designs? That’s exactly what Bert did for the whale and owl (pictured below top). She sketched her design then used dressmaker’s carbon paper to transfer it onto the plain muslin.
This has to be one of my favourite make your own projects and I will definitely be having a go at some of my own for all of the summer babies arriving round my way this year. Thank you Bert for sharing your gorgeous creations with us!
