A few weeks ago I received an excited email from a postnatal group cohort waxing lyrical about a friend of hers that had designed a kids book so cool that she’s near afraid to let her son touch it as she’s convinced it’ll be worth something one day. Not one to miss out, I got straight on to the designer and author Bret Syfert and he surprised us with a personalised copy which features a photo of the girls with a hand painted message.
Ladybug and the Big Gross Bug Book Adventure really is like a work of art with stunning, quirky, sometimes breathtaking visuals that actually convince you that the pages are textured even though they’re not. They’re a wonderful mix of painting, sketches, photographs mixed to wonderful collage effect with clever use of perspective and scale to add impact to the tale of a dream adventure where the ladybug meets various creepy bugs while giving an amusing education on bug facts.
While Saria at 3 years old is a little young for grasping the facts about pupa and crazy lady mosquitos, she was nonetheless riveted by the ladybugs travels and four and five year olds and beyond who are bug crazy will love it. It makes a stunning gift that you’ll want to treasure.
£8.49 without personalisation and £15.95 with from Bug Book Adventure which is a pretty cool site with slightly bonkers videos about the book that are worth a watch. You can also check out more of Bret Syfert’s work where you’ll see some instantly recognisable high profile work for London Transport Museum.
