Sometimes a really unsuspecting book can capture your child’s imagination. So it was with Alfie and Where Did My Clothes Come From? by Chris Butterworth (Candlewick Press, RRP £8.99). This is a great way to get your children thinking about how their clothes are made, featuring the entire manufacturing process, from field (in the case of wool and cotton) to wardrobe. It’s colourfully illustrated in a retro style, with punchy fact boxes and flow charts to keep them interested. Alfie was particularly fascinated to find out that fleece was made from recycled plastic bottles – he could barely believe it! There’s also a section on recycling to encourage them to think about what happens to clothing after they have outgrown it (straight into the loft in our house – must sort that out!)
