If you have Radio 4 on in the background at home like me and you have inquisitive children, you’ve probably been the recipient of questions about migrants and immigration lately: ‘Why do they want to come and live here – isn’t the weather better there?’ The Journey by Francesca Sanna (Flying Eye Books, RRP £12.99) is an exquisite picture book that goes some way to explaining the crisis in a way small people can understand. It tells the story of a mother and her two children fleeing a war-torn country from the perspective of one of the children. It’s beautifully illustrated and sensitively done (I defy you not to have a lump in your throat and tear in your eye by the end), comparing the family’s flight to the migration of birds. Can’t wait to read it with my two.
