If your little one is just learning to count, then I highly recommend Handstand: A Kind of Counting Book by Lisa Stickley (Pavilion, RRP £9.99). The first book from the illustrator and designer is the sweet tale of Edith, who is learning to do handstands. Through the course of the book, she encounters various animal characters as she is able to hold her handstands for longer each time. It’s a sweet concept and, in addition to helping children with their numbers and days of the week, also imparts the essential lesson that practice makes perfect. As you’d expect, the accompanying illustrations are visually pleasing – quirky line drawings with retro print fabrics and muted vintage tones. Lovely.
