Some of friends are so super green they have worm farms and no car (shock horror), so I always feel guilty when I get my disposable nappies out of the change bag. To feel less guilty I have tried more eco-friendly nappies (Nature Baby), but last time I used them they caused such bad nappy rash that I had to go back to Pampers and Huggies.
Bambo eco disposables were a pleasant surprise. Not just because of their performance, but also their green credentials.
They’re one of the most eco-friendly disposables – they’re around 70-80% biodegradable (compared to Moltex for example, a leading eco alternative, which are 50%+ biodegradable).
Appearance
They’re lovely and white (unlike some of the eco-brands) but this is achieved through oxygen bleaching, which is kind to the environment.
They look much like the mass brands. Slim in appearance and with a baby-ish picture on the waistband (which, personally I’m not so fond of, though the cartoon turtles and hippos are much less tacky than Huggies & Pampers Disneytastic designs).
Usage
As someone who will not sacrifice efficacy for environment, I thought that these were fabulous. They coped with my baby boy’s most challenging outbreaks and they soaked up all his wee-wee without leaving his bot and boy bits damp or red. They did seem to ‘pad out’ more quickly than Huggies/Pampers though, but this certainly isn’t a problem for daytime usage.
Size wise, they overlap on the weight bands – just bear in mind if your baby bridges two weight bands. My 20 pounder was much happier in the size 4 (17-39lb) than size 3 (11-22lb).
Price
It’s never easy to compare nappy costs, because brands use different size packs, different weight bands and there are always offers on in the supermarkets! Buy from Beamingbaby and size 3 (11-22lb) pack of 56 (for example) costs £11.99. This works out at 21 pence per nappy. Compared to 30 pence for a green friendly Moltex nappy from the same store. Or 16 pence for a Huggies nappy at Sainsburys.
My credit is crunched, what with being on maternity leave, so it’s a fair bit more expensive than the un-green alternative and I am wavering about whether or not I should buy. But they are certainly cheaper than the green alternatives, and if you buy in bulk this gets the price down further. At Beamingbaby you can order a trial nappy to make sure you’re happy before you spend any serious money, which is fab.
Overall
They work and they’re guilt free. You know what, I WILL order some, by jove! i think they’re great.
Verdict
4 and a half /5 (I just wish they were as stylishly designed as Nature Baby nappies)
