I can remember my first cloth encounter very well. I was about 3 months pregnant and ambling through the cool shops in Glasgow’s West End. I nipped into one to buy an organic hat and nightgown and there on the shelf I spied my first “real†nappy.
It was cream and made from bamboo, shaped like a disposable, but fastening instead with aplix (like Velcro). One stroke and I was smitten. I’d never felt such a soft and silky fabric. I thought straight away that I wanted this fabulous fabric next to my own babe’s bot.…
But what began with a few cream bamboo nappies, soon spiralled out of control with just a few quick googles….
You see, it’s a secret amongst only the “Cloth Nappy Addicts†that there are such things as uber-cool nappies, which score in the fashion as well as the environmental stakes…. The trick is knowing just where to find them…
Let’s start with the current UK fashions:
The biggest hit to cross the pond is currently the “Blueberry†It’s a birth to potty nappy is made from soft ‘Minky” fabric in the most amazing range of colours. Minky fabric is a super-soft plush pile fabric (synthetic). It is laminated to make it waterproof – but enough of the technical info – it works, trust me, – and just look at the colours!
If you’re fond of your LBD then you might hanker after this sophisticated little number in “Midnight” from UK nappy designer, Little Kiwi. OK, so you need to wear it with a wrap over the top, but it’s still a very cool nappy – bamboo too!
The best kept secret for the ultimate nappy stash resource though has to be the US site “Hyena Cart.â€
Billed as a collection of “earth-friendly†shops there are no fewer than 250 real nappy designers listing their wares on Hyena Cart. Many will ship to the UK. Here you can buy everything from really beautiful one-off designs such as these beautiful designs from Clothmopolitan to your own custom built nappies built to your own specs.
New designs from the most popular brands sell out in minutes. If you are interested in bagging one of these works of art then you need to be quick to check the calendar and wait for your chance to snap up a nappy truly fit to be seen and admired over the Summer months.
