Musical Youth: Instruments for Young Children

August 21, 2012. Leave a Comment

One of the most frequently accessed toy baskets in our house is the music basket. It’s the biggest of all and is packed with musical instruments from all over. Beyond the usual round of maracas and bells we never tire of finding new sounds to add to our collection and here are a few of our current favourites.

When my best friend gave Monty an accordion for his second birthday I did wonder what we were in for but the Scarlatti Child’s 7 Key Melodeon Accordion makes the sweetest sounds. Children as young as one have sat and created music with little effort and Monty has plans to turn it into a career.

Something to blow is always a winner and we like these Vilac bird whistles for their simplicity. A little more skill is needed for the recorder or harmonica although Betsy will enthusiastically

I hear our next addition is to be a guitar and wishes are being sent to the Solstice Fairy already. I like the Janod Confetti Guitar available at VUP Baby. I’m sure a Ukulele can’t be far behind and this powder blue version has my eye (pictured below).

Last but by no means least is something to bang. I am loving the Vilac Tin Drum with pictures by Nathalie Lete. For a more sparkling sound you can’t beat a xylophone. This JIP blue star xylophone is gorgeous and part of a range of instruments at The Hambledon.
