There’s something so overwhelmingly charming about toys designed by children (see Stuff My Doodle), especially when those children are trying to raise funds to build a school that even the poorest children in their Sri Lankan community can attend. On a visit to Kurunegala, designer Alexa Lixfeld asked the schoolchildren to draw a doll, then chose six designs to be made into dolls by women in the community for the Me And My Doll project. The dolls are not only handmade, but eco-friendly and fair trade, plus 50% of profits go to Sri Lanka, so their ethical credentials are faultless. They also look pretty cool, measure about 30cm, have retained the names given to them by the children (this is Ikesh, above, another is just called A Doll!) and come in their own colour-coordinated sleeping bag, £35 each, e-side.Â
