I had the pleasure of receiving copies of Maggie & Roses’s new beautifully illustrated hardback books. It’s one story in two editions with the same illustrations in each, told from the girls perspective in ‘Lovely Story’ and from the boys in ‘Totally save the day and are heros’. It’s a unique concept which the authors
For a bit of background, Maggie Bolger, with her friend Rose founded the Kensington based exclusive members club for families, ‘Maggie & Rose’. They provide a luxury ‘home away from home’ environment where they upmarket entertainment in the form of classes and events. By all accounts, this is like the Soho House for families!
Anyway, I digress…
Maggie Bolger, with Mr Z (Zebedee Helm) artist and writer have brought their creative talents together in these two delightfully imaginative books. The characters are Maggie, Rose, Oscar, and Bentley, the dog.
When exciting Uncle Fabiola arrives from NYC with magical, exciting gifts, the children and of course the dog, end up embarking on a wonderful adventure. Naturally gauging by the title, in the boys version, mini egos abound as he thinks he’s a superhero that saved the day.
The illustrations are fantastic reminding me of when I used to draw far too hard with my markers so you’d get breaks in the colour. Naturally Mr Z did this waaay better than my inept toddler self and what results is a book full of enchanting imagery. The bambino, despite being just under 18 months seemed to really enjoy it as she didn’t try to force me ahead or slam my fingers in between the book… She actually paid rapt attention all the way through!
Me being 31 years and counting really enjoyed the book and found myself snickering away as they have interspersed the book with childish humour for both children and parents to enjoy. I cracked up laughing when Rose says “please don’t smile, your teeth are SO white it hurts our eyes” to Uncle Fabiola.
These make highly desirable gifts and their clever use of one story ‘mirrored’ in two editions is sure to make this a hit. Definitely the best children’s books I’ve read in ages and I’ve read a lot!
You can buy them for £9.99 each from Maggie & Rose.
