I love visiting the Chronicle Books stand at trade shows as they have the best selection around. They seem to have the knack of picking up the stylistically elegant books with superb stories.
Little 1 is one of our absolute favourites. I must have read it twenty times the day we got it Milla loved it so much. It is the tale of Little 1 who is looking for some friends but finds that three is a crowd and not everyone is friendly. It is a story of adding, counting and finding your place in the world. The graphic illustrations which accompany the narrative are striking, playful and perfectly evoke the aesthetic of the era. Much is owed to Paul Rand who was a highly influential graphic designer most prolific in the 50s and 60s. We are lucky he turned his hand to children’s books so our little ones may be inspired by his distinctive art.
