I haven’t mentioned this to the boyf yet so let’s just keep this between us for now but I have always had a bit of a thing for the Charles Eames RAR Rocker. In fact I love chairs, a hangover from studying product design, and I was over at Ohdeedoh the other day and became re-fixated on the idea of having one.
To give a bit of background, the Rocking Armchair Rod (RAR) was originally released in 1948 and was made from moulded fibreglass-reinforced polyester seat shell and then connected to a metal rod and birch sled base. It is a design icon, hugely popular, and was put back into production after a 30 year break. I will, I mean would (if I was going to be buying it…) put it in the bambino’s room . I can see us chilling in there in the corner near the window, reading stories and chatting. OK, and it will look pretty sexy in her room even when it’s not in use… It isn’t defined by a particular living space so it can really go in any room you like and I have also seen them in a couple of offices. Hmmm…maybe it could go in mine… For some indication of how great they could look in yourchilds bedroom, check out Ohdeedohs roundup of its appearance in nursery’s.
Where to buy is a different matter and I have seen such different prices it’s confusing but have figured out that ones around £180 upwards are fairly decent reproductions and above £300 is the real deal. You need to double check how it has been made and what it has been made from. Some are injection moulded like cheap garden chairs and obviously, unless your name is ‘Cheap and Cheerful’, you’ll be disappointed by the quality. Ideally handmade from fibreglass with high quality wood like American maple and check where it is made. Obviously, if you can afford it, go for the real deal.
I haven’t chosen where to buy, I mean where I could buy mine, but here are a few suggestions for researching:
Swanky Rooms for £189.99 but it takes 6-8 weeks for delivery
Mojo Interiors for £189 + £25 delivery
Pink Apple Designs for £319. Produced by Vitra and 4-6 weeks delivery.
Couch Potato Company for £334. They’re still advertising 15% off for their spring sale on the product page so this could make it around £300.
In the meantime, I highly recommend Taschen’s 1000 Chairs by Charlotte and Peter Fiell £5.99 from the Bambino Goodies Amazon Store, and I shall have to highlight some more chairs that are perfect for you and your bambino.
