I absolutely love the concept of The Book with No Pictures by BJ Novak (Puffin, RRP £12.99). There are a few children’s books with no words (Wonder Bear, Foxly’s Feast and Flora and the Flamingo spring to mind), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with no illustrations. It’s cleverly done – the words themselves are displayed in different fonts, colours and sizes to hold little ones’ interest, but it’s the instructions to the reader that make it so appealing. It’s entirely designed to make grown-ups say silly, ridiculous things and is sure to have children in fits of giggles as they listen to their parents say things like, ‘I am a robot monkey’ and ‘My head is made of blueberry pizza’. A perfect gift for Father’s Day.
