I know I’m biased, but Alfie really is brilliant (I’m talking about Shirley Hughes’ creation, although mine is too). We love these books in our house and I spotted this total bargain over at The Book People – 10 books for £9.99. If you’re not familiar with the series, it explores the adventures of a little boy called, you guessed it, Alfie, his baby sister, Annie Rose, Mum, Dad, neighbours and friends, growing up in the 1980s. The illustrations are beautiful and timeless and the books details the kind of everyday experiences young children can really relate to. Our favourites are Alfie’s Feet, where he gets new wellies and puts them on the wrong way round, and Alfie Lends a Hand, where he helps out at his friend Bernard’s birthday party. Click quickly as I imagine these will be popular for Christmas. Alfie (5) still loves them and Kitty (2) is borderline obsessed with them. Warning/spoiler: Be aware that in Alfie and the Birthday Surprise the cat does die (it caught me out the first time we read it!)
