Can’t go wrong with a good coffee table book and Design for Children by Kimberlie Birks (Phaidon, RRP £39.95) is definitely that. More for mamas and papas than little ones (although those with impeccable taste will love it!), it’s an encyclopaedia of everything we hold dear here at BG: beautiful, practical products for children, encompassing toys and furniture.
You’ll spot many items we’ve featured over the years, from Plui’s raincloud bath toy to Amy Whitworth’s Qubis Haus doll’s house and Miller Goodman’s Playshapes, via Mr Maria’s Miffy lamp. You’ll also find vintage classics, such as Brio’s 1958 pull-along dachshund, Patrick Rylands’ iconic 1966 PlayPlax blocks and Stokke’s 1972 Tripp Trapp chair (all still going strong here), plus more recognisable everyday toys, such as Stieff’s teddy bear, Meccano, Maileg mice and, of course, Lego. All in all, a really fascinating delve into the world of children’s design.
