Last week we headed to the Theatre Royal in Winchester to see the latest production from Scamp Theatre; Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales. We took Milla (4), Monty (3), Betsy and her buddy (13 & 15 months) and went with a big group of local friends. It was a perfect afternoon out. Any apprehension I might have had over taking two 1 year olds to the theatre was quickly forgotten; they were rapt from the off.
Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales is adapted from four Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler books: Tiddler: The Story Telling Fish, Monkey Puzzle, A Squash and a Squeeze and The Smartest Giant in Town. Monkey Puzzle begins the show and is woven in between the performance of the other stories.
The tales are told with plenty of songs, puppetry and imaginative props. The music is a mix and we particularly liked the country style songs during A Squash and a Squeeze. The stories are easy to follow without a knowledge of the books and even the babies were engaged with the action on stage.
If you’re looking for an excellent show to see or a memorable first theatre experience I couldn’t recommend Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales more. It has wide appeal and at 55 minutes running time it is the perfect length for short attentions.
Touring until 1st July 2012 with Summer dates at Edinburgh Festival and E4’s Udderbelly all details on their site.
