I’m a huge fan of French toymakers Vilac, who the bambino has quite a few toys from. They’re all wooden, beautifully crafted, and really well priced. But they do seem to have gone up a few notches in price with the Calder Kangaroo which I have seen for as much as…hold your breath…£165!
So what is it? Back in the 1920s, Alexander Calder, a renowned American sculptor and artist who also invented the baby mobile, designed this kangaroo pull-along toy and it became a bit of a design classic. Vilac are producing them exactly as they were originally made.
The fists of this blue/grey darling looked poised to give you a punch (they won’t) but he does bob up and down whilst being pulled along. Dimension wise they’re 58cm in length and 45cm in height.
They’re no longer on sale in the UK since we originally published this post and have only been able to find them in the US at stores like The Conran Shop. I’m sure they will picked up by toy collectors or prized by a very lucky toddler.
