As a new mum, I can testify that what you look like is the last thing on your mind for those first few weeks. But, inevitably, as wedding/christening/party invites roll in, the less than satisfactory state of your body starts to prey on your mind, which is where the Belly Bandit comes in. I don’t know any mum without paid help who has time to do 100 sit-ups a day, so the promise of a more svelte silhouette without the effort has instant appeal.
Abdominal binding has been used post-natally in Eastern cultures for cultures, so the Belly Bandit is just an update of an ancient tradition. Made from polyester and Lycra, with a Velcro fastening, the BB reduces swelling and water retention and will improve your posture and support your back during breastfeeding. It even claims to reduce stretch marks.
I didn’t start wearing mine immediately after birth as recommended, nor have I been wearing it day and night, but when I remember it does seem to smooth out my mummy tummy and generally keep everything tucked in, causing me to walk a bit taller. It’s tight, but not uncomfortably so and doesn’t restrict movement in any way. I’ll report back on any further developments as you’re supposed to wear it for 6-8 weeks to see real results.
As a quick fix to get back in shape after birth, the Belly Bandit is a good buy and comes in funky packaging, unlike other similar products which can look a little medical. Apparently, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Jessica Alba have all worn one post-partum and if their figures are anything to go by…
