It’s a tough world out there and it’s only going to get tougher for our little ones. Which is why it’s a good idea to get the ethos of saving the planet and changing the world through positive action instilled early. Be the Change, Make it Happen by Bernadette Russell (Ivy Kids, RRP £9.99) is a great way to get these messages across. It’s full of easily achieveable altruistic ideas, such as ‘Become a litter legend.’, ‘Encourage the whole family to walk as much as possible.’ and ‘Offer to read stories to kids in hospital.’ There are also loads of creative suggestions of ways to raise funds for charity – selling old toys, organising a film night, making and selling a comic – and general ways to be really nice – listen to an old person, make a little book for a librarian, volunteer to walk a dog at a pet rescue centre. Russell’s bright and quirky illustrations are really engaging and stop the book being too worthy – a welcome addition to any child’s bookshelf.
