Bayard Books publish a range of ‘box books’ for up to 12 years old with a concept of publishing monthly magazines with a book feel. Featuring a ‘book length’ story along with more picture stories, games, science pages that answer your tots questions about the world, a focus on a different animal each issue, plus puzzles and activities, it’s all in line with the national curriculum – don’t worry, it’s not a pressurised environment!
It attracts big name contributions from the likes of Michael Morpurgo, the Children’s Laureate, renowned illustrator Helen Oxenbury, and their most recent issue had a poem illustrated by the mighty Quentin Blake. There’s also StoryBox’s own cartoon hero SamSam, along with other regular features.
The StoryBox books are aimed at 3-6 year olds and even though the bambino is a tad young to grasp some of the concepts, we still enjoyed it, although they’re definitely more apt for over three’s. These have have more of a wholesome, traditional appearance to them, in contrast to some of the more stylised kids magazine’s like Okido and Anorak Magazine, but this doesn’t distract from their charm and aptitude to stimulate young imaginations. And even though they call it a magazine, you’ll be in no danger of throwing these out!
