Following on from Lu’s water bottle post last week, the next in our Back to School 10 best series is all about easing the transition for the little ones. Some will embrace the change, others may struggle. But fear not, there are some great books about starting school and nursery available which will help you explain what to expect. Here are some of our favourites:
I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child (Candlewick Press, RRP £5.99). Lola is nearly big enough to go to school but not so sure and Lola’s invisible friend is a little nervous. Available as a chunky board book, perfect for little hands.
The School by Dick Bruna (Tate Publishing, RRP £4.99). A rhyming introduction to the school day and perfect preparation for young children. Out of print since 1968, it has been published to coincide with the 60th anniversary edition of The Apple, Dick Bruna’s first book. Worth investing in for that reason alone!
Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg (Puffin, RRP £6.99). From first day nerves to finding your peg, it’s a picture book which offers advice for the family in a fun way.
When an Elephant Comes to School by Jan Ormerod (Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, RRP £6.99). An appealing picture book about making an elephant’s first day at nursery school fun and happy!
Going to School by Anna Civardi (Usborne, RRP £3.99). Featuring Stephen Cartwright’s delightful illustrations, providing lots to look at and talk about.
Where’s My Peg? by Jen Green (Wayland, RRP £6.99). Written from a child’s point of view, it shows what to expect when starting school and is illustrated by the brilliant Mike Gordon.
Going to Playschool by Sarah Garland (Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, RRP £5.99).  Another book which has been reissued. This one is a classic featuring a warm and very down-to-earth family as they go about their daily life.
Harry and the Dinosaurs go to School by Ian Whybrow (Puffin, RRP £6.99). Harry is nervous because he isn’t sure what to expect. But soon Harry sees another boy who is the most nervous of all. Beautifully illustrated.
Topsy and Tim: Start School by Jean Adamson (Ladybird, RRP £4.99) A picture book for children who will learn what to expect in lessons, in the playground and all around the school.
And for the grown-ups:
The Starting School Survival Guide by Sarah Ebner (White Ladder Press, RRP £10.99). What every parent needs to know before your first child starts school. From classroom to playground, and beyond the school gate, this is essential reading for every parent entering the school system for the very first time!
