If any of you were camping over half term, you’ll know that although the sun was shining (yay!), the nights are still pretty chilly at this time of year. Our second rule of camping (first rule: ‘Have fun!’) is ‘Don’t let yourself get cold’, so the children are used to slipping into warmer clothes before sundown. We love merino wool as a base layer, so Alfie was thrilled when he was sent a merino wool top from Amamaya. Launched by mama Laura Sweet in 2016, because she couldn’t find suitable outdoor clothing for her daughter, Amamaya specialises in merino wool products, including hats, snoods and sweaters. Made in the UK, the Lukla base layer is super-soft in dove grey with pops of vivid colour on the neckline, cuffs and hem. It is long in the body to prevent chilly tummies and backs and has thumb holes to stop the sleeves riding up under top layers. Ideal under skiwear, but also perfect to sleep in while camping or as a lightweight top layer for colder summer evenings, it costs £38, but ours has washed really well, so should last and then be passed down to Kitty, so a sound investment. Alfie absolutely loves his and will wear it at any opportunity, but we’ll be really putting it through its paces on our camping trip next weekend. PS: Check out Amamaya’s amazing colourful hats – on my winter wish list for both children!
