10 Medieval Fancy Dress Ideas for Camp Bestival

July 14, 2011. Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever been to Bestival or Camp Bestival, you’ll know that dressing up is all part of the fun. Every year, organiser Rob da Bank decides on a theme for the Saturday and there’s a big parade involving as many festival-goers as possible. This year’s Camp Bestival theme is medieval, so think knight, princesses, kings, queens and dragons. In case you’re stuck for ideas, I’ve put together a handy selection of outfits and accessories for little ones, ranging from the, frankly, extravagant (but fabulous), to the inexpensive. First up is Isabee, definitely at the luxe end of the market. They offer a selection of suitable costumes, including a knight and king, but it’s the glitzy queen I love. Shiny gold cape (2-3 years+), £28, and jewelled felt crown headdress (one size fits all up to adult), £30. Yes, please!

Sarah’s Silks also has a selection of gorgeousness – I love the princess wimple, £18.95 (ages 3-9), and dress (3-6), £54.95, both Myriad Toys.

The Sarah’s Silks dragon suit (ages 3-7) is also amazing. £39.50, Nic Nac Noo.

Kotori Kits’ dinosaur costume also doubles up as a great dragon for little ones, but you do have to make it yourself. How cute though? £15.95 for either 12-36 months or 3-5 years.

Alfie will be wearing a pair of pyjamas to Camp Besti, but not just any PJs – these are dressing up pyjamas. We’ve opted for the Welsh knight, but I like the kingsman design. £16.34 (2-4 years), Wickle.

If your offspring are not fans of pyjamas, this tabard with hood should fit the bill perfectly. £12, Charlie Crow.

Accessorise with a wooden shield by Egmont. £9, Little Fashion Gallery.

And an authentic reproduction of a medieval sword (in wood, naturally) from Tyme Again, £5.39. Says not recommended for under fives, but we have one and I don’t see any reason why it’s not fine for supervised play as the edges are rounded and the wood is super-smooth.

For a real last-minute, low-maintenance option, you’ll be hard pushed to beat Djeco’s Knight Masks. £4.99 for four (ages 3+), The Beanstalk.

And if you’ve got a total fancy dress refusenik on your hands, give them a Jester’s Jingle Stick to shake (until it starts to jangle your nerves). £2, When I Was A Kid.
