Not a story as such, but Jojo’s First Word Book by Xavier Deneux (Twirl Books, RRP £12.99) is a great introduction to lots of familiar words accompanied by Deneux’s ever-enchanting illustrations. Meet Jojo and his sister Lulu, two adorable bunnies who will take you through their daily lives in this beautiful shiny board and paper book. It has four tabbed sections – Jojo and Lulu, At Home, Out and About and Animal Friends – which feature more than 200 objects for little ones to point out and name, plus concepts such as feelings, road safety, learning to ride a bike and potty training. Kitty absolutely loves it, particularly the handle which enables her to carry it around the house, and will sit and leaf through it happily on her own. I think it’s fabulous – there are occasional American words, such as sidewalk for pavement and faucet for tap, but I don’t think it detracts. My only reservation is the page where ‘Jojo fixes things just like Daddy’, but at least Lulu is engaged in drawing not cooking on the opposite page. A great gift for a curious toddler.
