Starting from Scratch: What You Should Know about Food and Cooking by Sarah Elton (Owlkids, £12.56) is a book about food and the basics of cooking for kids. The aim is for kids, I’d suggest 6+, to be able to relate to what they are eating. It’s not a cook book, it’s about learning about food and explains, in an easy-to-read way, subjects like ingredients, taste, fat versus acid and sweet versus salt. It’s aim is for kids to be able to make sense of recipes, measure and substitute ingredients, and stock a pantry, but they’ll also discover that food is more than just a prepackaged meal. And, hopefully, (the reason I am getting it) try new flavours and understand what’s on their plate. Wish me luck!
