A friend sent me a ‘saw this and thought of you’ email about these when he spotted them over on Dezeen. I was immediately interested as excess packaging is one of my major bugbears but disappointed to find out they wouldn’t be available until March.
As we all know, kids love nothing more than playing with the boxes those expensive and carefully chosen toys come in; Oscar Diaz’s brilliant design takes the idea one step further – the packaging is the toy. The components (wheels, grille stickers, cabin) of each of the four vehicles (fire engine, tractor, car and train) are contained in a cardboard tube with pre-cut slots which becomes the body of the toy.
I’ve yet to get my hands on one for a play, but the concept is great. The only piece of packaging you need to recycle is the paper strip around the tube. At just £10.50, a Tube Toy would make an innovative eco gift for hard-to-buy-for little ones. Pre-order (available end of March) now from e-side.
