When I became a parent one of the things which excited me the most was passing on the favourite books of my childhood. I imagine that when my children become parents themselves I imagine that Oliver Jeffers will be one of the treasured authors they pass down.
Oliver Jeffers latest book This Moose Belongs to Me (Harper Collins Children’s Books RRP: £11.99) is a tale of possession and friendship. Wilfred finds a moose who he names Marcel and assumes to be his. Wilfred has rules for Marcel who follows them with varying degrees of success. Then someone else comes along who claims Marcel is theirs. Wilfred is left to ponder the nature of ownership.
The illustrations in this book are rich with landscape and forest. Jeffers’ has a talent for elevating the nuances of relationships and belonging; giving us pause to reflect on our own perceptions. His gentle words and humour ensure that this is another story which will be read again and again.
