Until now, when you have a baby, you’re basically committing to buying a few car seats until they reach 12 years old or 135cm. Have more than one child and you’re likely to find yourself shelling out for a ‘family car’ as well. Multimac looks set to revolutionise the multi car seat owning family. Their three and four seaters will expand the car seat room so even if you’ve been clinging to your teeny car, you can cling a bit longer! Three seaters go where you could only fit two (bulky) child seats and four seaters turn 5 seater cars into six.
Fitted independently of the adult seat belts by being secured to the chassis with tether straps and able to be removed quickly from the car, the seats are constructed to the same standard as aircraft seats and are a unique, self contained, energy absorbing design made from special grade aluminium.
The major attraction for some though, will be the fact that the rear facing seats can be used to the age of 3 like in Sweden, as has been recommended here in the UK – when I wrote about choosing a car seat several months back, the rear facing issue was mentioned.
For those concerned about insurance, Norwich Union have specifically approved it and so far, other insurance companies are accepting the seat and it doesn’t invalidate your policy or add to your premium. Despite it’s varying loads, it meets all rigourous requirements of EC 44-04.
This does win brownie points for innovation although they’re keeping it simple on the aesthetics front with grey, navy, and black being your choice, although you can get them customised to match, for example, your own car interior.
Of course having a set of car seats that can be used from birth to twelve saving you money and aggro, especially when you factor in giving lifts to other peeps kids, doesn’t come cheap. From £1099 for the 3-seater and £1299 for the 4-seater – add your car make and model to find out which size is appropriate.
