On the top shelf in my lounge, taunting me, is the exquisite Binth baby journal that my lovely work colleagues bought me when I went on maternity leave in March 2009. It has absolutely nothing written in it. Don’t worry – I did record all the important happenings in Alfie’s life, but I did them with stickers on a calendar as, frankly, that’s all there was time for! I also have a box of photos that need to go into the journal along with ultrasounds and footprints. I might be alone in this (my wedding photos have been waiting six years to go into their album, so there is a precedent here), but I doubt it. To be a parent is to be too busy to write everything neatly in a book, which is why I wish mementobox had been around then.
Luckily for Kitty, it is now. It’s a baby journal app that enables you to record milestones and memories on the move. I’ve seen a couple of apps like this and thought ‘what a good idea’, but they’ve all been a bit too twee and pastel for me to actually buy. Mementobox is bright, colourful and straightforward to use – me likey. It’s divided into three sections – My Birth, where you can store scans, bump pictures, details of the labour (nice bits only, of course), visitors, plus (really useful) gifts received and thank yous sent; My First Year, where you can record all those firsts and My World, where you can create a time capsule of all the things going on in the media when your little one was born.
I don’t go anywhere without my iPhone, so I reckon I’ll find this really handy. If Kitty’s first steps happen on holiday? No problem – I’ll upload the details and video and share with Grandma back at home (you can upload to Facebook and Twitter or email). I also think it will be a lovely thing to look at with her when she’s older and I can tell her what was at number one and in the news when she was born. You can also add additional children, so if I ever discover that mythical extra hour a day I’ll upload the story of Alfie’s first year as well. I’ll definitely be gifting it to my mama-to-be friends the moment I hear their happy news (shhh, don’t tell them). I like the idea of combining it with the Milestone Baby Cards Nat featured a while back. Mementobox, £2.49, the App Store.
