Make Your Own Monday: Hetty Feather-inspired miniature hats

February 8, 2021. Leave a Comment

Hetty Feather hats

Kitty is a huge fan of all things Jacqueline Wilson, particularly the Hetty Feather series of historical books. We were kindly given an old Hetty Feather annual along with some books (thanks, Kath) and Kitty found this cute little craft idea. Since then, she has spent hours happily making them, commandeering all the bottle tops in the house and raiding the craft drawers for trimmings.

They are pretty simple to make:

  1. First, paint your chosen bottle top with acrylic paint or nail polish and leave to dry.
  2. Next, cut out a circle of paper or felt slightly bigger than your bottle top for the rim. You can use patterned paper or decorate it yourself.
  3. Glue your top to the circle.
  4. Cut a piece of ribbon or trim and wrap around the bottle top.
  5. Create a bow or flower with ribbon or attach a button, bead or sequin as decoration.

Miniature hats

To finish, you can glue a hairclip, headband or brooch to the base, attach to elastic for a toy to wear, or just frame as an artwork. Here you can see a few of Kitty’s makes – as you can see, she went off piste for a fez (Doctor Who fan) and I’m sure when we replenish the sequin supplies there will be a few disco hats joining the display. So, save up a few bottle tops, give them free reign of the craft drawers and perhaps grab yourself an hour’s peace over half term.
