J Crew is the quintessential US brand, renowned for high-quality basic separates with a design twist. It started as a catalogue business in 1983 – now it collaborates with catwalk designers. Only available to us UK peeps since 2012, the chidren’s collection, crewcuts, is a teensy bit fabulous. Yes, some of it is a bit American for my tastes – I’m not keen on toddler boys in collared shirts, for example, but there are flashes of brilliance.
What little girl wouldn’t love the glittery pumps, top  – available in a rainbow of shades - for a special party, £52.03, while the short-sleeved short PJs, above, will be great for this summer’s heatwave (come on, surely we deserve one?), £33.23.
Meanwhile, over in the baby section, you’ll find a host of goodies from brands such as Oeuf, Makie and Nature Baby, alongside own label cashmere pieces – my pick of the baby section is this Rikshaw Design baby kurta, £34.98. There’s also a small and beautifully curated selection of toys and accessories. Not exactly priced for times of austerity, but definitely worth a look for special occasions.
