Elli writes…Â We held a naming do for our little one last week. We asked guests to come empty-handed, but people are too generous and we ended up with a pile of lovely stuff.
One of the most original gifts was Hip Hop Baby, a CD of hip hop classics rearranged as lullabies. What a wicked idea!  And Punk Rock Baby, the record label, pull it off brilliantly. Almost too brilliantly, in fact. This is the sort of thing you could have on as background music when friends come over for dinner and no one would know it was meant for the nursery.
The compilation opens with an instrumental version of Push It. Â The bass line is stripped out and a distant child’s voice sings the ‘Oh baby baby’ bit, which is spooky and funny at the same time. Of the twelve tracks, my favourites are Gangstas Paradise, White Lines and Ready or Not / Fu-Gee-La Medley. Inevitably, you end up filling in the missing lyrics and singing along. Or better still, digging out the original and dancing round the living room with your little one in tow, telling yourself it’s good for the baby’s sense of rhythm.
You can buy Hip Hop Baby for £6.99  from Amazon. There are other compilations in the series including 80’s Baby, Rock Baby and Country Baby. Find track listings on Punk Rock Baby.
