The wooden market stall/shop my parents bought for the children is still (even though they are now nine and nearly six) the most played with toy in our house and we have a LOT of toys. It inspires brilliantly imaginative scenarios – it’s been a stall at a festival, a vegan cafe (well, they are Brighton born and bred) and a post office – and is one of the few toys they can play with happily for ages without argument. So, I genuinely recommend a play shop as a fantastic investment for children from toddler up. This mint green one by Danish company Flexa is just gorgeous. It has pegs to hang things from, a blackboard that can be used as an open/closed sign and three wooden trays. £155, Nubie. You can also buy a matching till, £39, and fruit and grocery bundles, £24 each, to complete the set.
