We all know about the amazing rinks at Somerset House and The Natural History Museum, but there are plenty of outdoor ice skating opportunities around the rest of the UK.
Over in the land of my fathers, Cardiff at Christmas boasts a big rink on City Hall Lawn, overlooked by the towering Star Ride and flanked by an alpine village, serving warming wintery treats. Tickets cost from £6.
Closer to (my) home, the Pavilion Ice Rink is back in Brighton. It really is the most stunning setting, particularly after dark when the the Pavilion Buildings are illuminated by coloured lighting. Tickets cost from £7,
Up in Scotland, Glasgow on Ice is bang slap in the middle of the city in George Square, so easy to pop along to for a break from Christmas shopping. Tickets cost from £6.
Part of York’s Winter Wonderland extravaganza, The Ice Factor is a real ice rink with an adjoining alpine-themed restaurant, replete with reindeer skins and pine trees. Tickets cost from £8.50.
I’ve only ever visited the Eden Project in the summertime, but I imagine it’s really magical in winter. The ice rink certainly looks stunning and is one of the longest running, not closing until March 2014. Tickets cost £6, plus admission to Eden.
