With so many of my friends announcing they are expecting their first baby I have pregnancy on the brain so when I saw that the Pregnancy Companion iPhone App was available for free download over the weekend I snapped it up. Developed by two practicing obstetricians, the Pregnancy Companion aims to be a one stop shop for pregnancy information, tracking and data control.
Features include: baby’s development, appointment tracking and reminders, FAQs, hydration counter, nutrition, calorie counter, yoga poses, acupressure points, baby names, kick counters and a contraction timer. You can change the skin from pink to one of several other colours. The interface is easy to use and the information is all simply written. As a pregnancy book junkie myself I would happily have used the week by week information on this app as my source of knowledge.
A couple of cons I found: for some reason the app thinks a pregnancy is 39 weeks rather than 40 (or 41 if you’re in France) so the information towards the end doesn’t match up to what we would be advised in the UK. The app will calculate your BMI and give you a calorie intake based on this to track although when it encountered my, ahem, hefty figure it gave me a generous 2,700 calories daily and I’m not sure if this would be approved of by my doctor! I think there are some elements I would question and if in doubt would defer to my midwife for guidance.
I’d say at only £0.59 it is a handy app to have in your pocket along with a pinch of common sense.
