Welcome to the BG Christmas Gift Guide 2011. I love the tradition of new pyjamas for Christmas. Wrap them up, then let your little one open them on Christmas Eve, wear them to bed and to open presents in the morning. Better than being embarrassed by those over-washed, ill-fitting ones you’ve been meaning to trade in…

During my quest I’ve found that the designs ‘for boys’ are generally much more attractive and less stereotypical than those for girls. You wouldn’t believe the number of sickly sugary pink fairies and flowers out there. But I did find a few great unisex pairs the first of which is this zingy set from Polarn O. Pyret covered with buildings, £22.
Next up, needless to say, I’m a huge fan of Smafolk’s owl design, cool for girls or boys. £21, Kinder Kinder.
Equally gender non-specific are these starfish from Ida T. Loving the smiley faces and bright red trim. £22.99, Nordic Kids.
Most toddlers are fans of jungle animals, so aren’t going to complain about having them all over their nightwear. 100% organic and fairtrade too, so you can sleep easy. £27, Gossypium.
What can I say? I want these Popupshop moon PJs in my size, please. Out of this world. €40, Little Fashion Gallery.
Feeling festive? Embrace the vibe with a reindeer design from John Lewis. Great value at £20 for two pairs.
Yes, they’ve got trains on, but girls like trains too, right? I’ve gone on about them before and it’s well deserved – fab PJs, €29.90, ByGraziela.
Hatley is the big daddy brand of PJs and therefore has a great selection for boys and girls. My picks are these dinosaurs, £18.99, Juicy Tots.
And these Katvigalike Nordic Apples, £19.90, Soup Dragon.
In the ‘aimed at boys’ (although clearly also equally appropriate for girls), my five favourites are IVANAHelsinki’s Lada design in soft grey – makes a nice change from sports cars. £34.99, Nordic Kids.
Usually a bit too countrified and twee for me, Joules has this surprisingly fashion forward monochrome pair, emblazoned with tools, £24.95.
One small step for man… One giant leap for fashion conscious children with Cath Kidston‘s vintage-inspired outer space design, £20.
Mini viking print for your mini viking from Danefae. Fantastic jade green colour. €33.95, Emilea.
We’re obsessed with David McKee’s Elmer books in our house at the moment. What better accompaniment than these blue elephant pyjamas, €42.95, Shak-Shuka.
Now, here come the girls. Firstly, who doesn’t love the stylings of Russian matryoshka dolls? I certainly do and particularly on these funky PJs from Their Nibs. £16, Bells & Whistles Kids.
This red and purple pair by Melton is so jolly it makes me smile – would definitely brighten up a gloomy winter’s day. £21, Tootsie and Fudge.
Good old M&S comes up trumps with this remarkably Scandi looking deer and heart print. A total bargain at between £9 and £11.
Unashamedly girlie, but super-cute is this bird design from Irish label Old Rectory. £24, The Urban Meadow. Sweet dreams, everyone!
