You run a risk putting a word like beautiful in the title of your book, but in the case of Beautiful Birds by Jean Roussen and Emmanuelle Walker (Flying Eye Books, RRP £14.99) it’s entirely justified. This is an alphabet book extraordinaire, taking young ornithologists through the A to Z of our feathered friends, from those they see in the park (swans, robins and ducks) via vibrantly coloured favourites (peacocks, flamingos and toucans) to the unusual and unpronounceable (quetzal, xanthocephalus and zosteropidae). Walker’s illustrations are absolutely stunning  (crying out to be made into prints) with pops of neon orange adding a contemporary twist that perfectly complements Roussen’s rhyming text. Pre-order (it’s out next week) now.
