One of the things I like best about the internet is the way it allows niche makers to put out stuff that would never have found a market before. And Binny Talib’s whimsical wallpaper is a perfect example of that. Olden days, she’d have had to print it up, ship it to stores, and watch it die, given that mainstream taste will always lean towards the non-quirky. And that might well have been that, if she had limited funds.
These days, there’s a whole new sales model: print on demand. An illustrator need only think her doodles might look good on a wall, and thanks to companies like Photowall, they can upload their images and see if it’s true. Plus, the potential market is no longer a few people who might physically walk into a shop – it only need be a few people out of every million, so long as they have access to the internet.
And so, Pups in Cups. Ducks in cups. And another favourite, below left, Living in a Droplet. I just picked out a few that I liked, but there is a whole collection, any one of which would be gorgeous in a baby or kid’s room. Talib is an Aussie illustrator, but Brits and other Europeans can order via Photowall. See her whole portfolio (plus some truly amazing illustration) at Talib’s personal website.
